Statement by the Spokesperson on attacks in Nigeria

Nigeria is once again the target of violence. Over the last days, clashes in the northern city of Zaria have left more than 60 victims and many wounded. Our thoughts and condolences go to those who lost loved ones.

We expect all local religious, political and community leaders to exercise restraint and respect human rights. We look forward to a thorough investigation by the Nigerian authorities of the incident to be urgently launched in order to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.

The attacks on civilians in Nigeria and the repeated acts of violence from Boko Haram, show all countries must work together in partnership against violence and terrorism.

The EU remains committed to providing a comprehensive range of security, political, development and humanitarian support to Nigeria and its people, and supports all actions leading to the development of a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
