On 14th September, Mr. Jose Marcos Mavungo was convicted to 6 years in prison on charges of the crime of rebellion. The trial leading to the conviction failed to provide the defendant with adequate guarantees of transparency and due legal process. The EU expects that the avenues available for redress will allow to review the verdict in a fair and transparent manner.
The respect for freedom of assembly, freedom of expression and access to justice, are all enshrined in Angola's Constitution and international conventions as well as regional human rights instruments the country adhered to.
The EU remains committed to support the Angolan authorities in the implementation of the commitments made in the recent Universal Periodic Review process and in promoting and protecting human rights.
