HRVP Mogherini's meeting with Premier of China Li Keqiang

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of EU-China relations, the High Representative/Vice-president Federica Mogherini met today in Beijing with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. Preparations for the upcoming EU-China Summit were at the center of their discussions, including on possible areas for further EU-China cooperation. They also discussed major global issues such as climate change, on which both sides agreed to work closely together in view of the COP21 Climate Change Conference in Paris.

During her two-day official visit to China, HRVP Mogherini also met with the Minister in charge of the International Department of the Central Committee of the Party, Mr Wang Jiarui, China Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr Wang Yi and co-chaired the 5th EU-China Strategic dialogue with State Councilor Yang Jiechi.

In depth discussions were held on EU-China bilateral relations as well as on regional and international issues such as the situation in Libya, Yemen, Syria and the Middle East, Ukraine and Asia. The negotiations on the Iranian nuclear programme and global issues of mutual interest such as Climate Change, the post-2015 development agenda, the role of the UN and multilateralism were also on the agenda.

At the end of the visit, HRVP Mogherini stated: "The EU and China are celebrating 40 years of strong relations. Our partnership, initially focused on economic issues, has evolved into a political dialogue for the mutual benefit of our peoples. Even if we are geographically far from each other, today's global challenges know no borders - we have to address them together and I am looking forward to the EU-China Summit, which will contribute to deepen and broaden our cooperation".
