The need for a common effort to address the issue of migration, from tackling root causes to facing the emergencies, is at the core of a series of meetings and contacts that the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission, Federica Mogherini, has planned following the Special European Council on migration on 23 April.
She will have contacts with UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, and with the Chairperson of the African Union commission, Nkosazana Clarice Dlamini-Zuma.
On Monday 27 April, Federica Mogherini will be together with UNSG Ban Ki-moon and Italy's Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on board the Navy ship San Gusto off the coast of Sicily, to assess the situation and help ensure European solidarity for the efforts undertaken to save the lives of migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea.
The High Representative will then travel to New York on Tuesday to meet with key UN interlocutors and international partners, including to discuss this crisis. On Wednesday, Federica Mogherini will be in Washington where she will have a meeting with US Secretary of State, John Kerry.
