Statement by High Representative/Vice President Federica Mogherini on the resumption of the UN-facilitated Libyan political dialogue

The resumption of talks among the Libyan parties later this week in Morocco will pave the way for a much needed political agreement on a Government of National Unity in Libya. As EU, and likewise the rest of the international community, we continue to support the efforts of the UN Secretary General's Special Representative, Bernardino León, with whom I am in constant contact.

The crisis in Libya is the most dangerous one unfolding in the southern neighbourhood of the European Union and runs the real risk of getting worse, with dramatic consequences for all of Europe. The UN-facilitated Libyan political dialogue must succeed in order to stop the free fall of the country that we are witnessing and the institutional vacuum which has created a breeding ground for terrorist groups like Daesh.

All 28 EU Member States have shown their willingness to address the crisis. Now, more than ever, we need to do our part. It is for these reasons that the situation in Libya will be again and as the first point on the agenda of the informal meeting of the EU ministers of Foreign Affairs that will take place in Riga on Friday and Saturday. The EU is ready to fully assist a Government of National Unity in Libya in the common fight against Daesh. The meeting, under the Latvian presidency, ahead of the formal Foreign Affairs Council on 16 March, will be the occasion to discuss and agree on concrete steps.
