During their Summit in Vienna in May 2006, the EU & Latin America/Caribbean Heads of State welcomed the initiative of periodically organizing Social Cohesion Fora to stimulate dialogue and cooperation on equality, eradication of poverty and social inclusion between the two regions.
As a preparatory event in the run-up to the Lima Summit, the Government of Chile offered to organize a first Forum in Santiago in cooperation with the European Commission. This major event took place on 23-25 September 2007 and was proposed as an input for the 5th EU-LAC Lima Summit (May 2008), in the areas of social cohesion.
