EU-CELAC Summit
Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean to Promote Investments of Social and Environmental Quality in both regions
The 1st EU-CELAC Summit / 7th EU-LAC Summit brought together European, Latin American and Caribbean Heads of State and Government in Santiago (Chile) on 26-27 January 2013, to address an Alliance for Sustainable Development to Promote Investments of Social and Environmental Quality. During the Summit, the Leaders adopted a political Declaration and expanded the Action Plan [141 KB] previously adopted in the Madrid Summit in 2010 for bi-regional cooperation.
Ministers of Foreign Affairs met ahead of the Summit on 25 January to discuss the theme "Working Together for Growth and Sustainability" and to prepare the Leaders' meeting.
Other High Level Meetings with sub-regional organisations took place in the morning of 26 January:
High Level Meeting EU-SICA
High Level Meeting EU-CARIFORUM
In addition, a number of preparatory events were held in the run up to the Summit. These events span across different sectors of society gathering together representatives of both regions such as parliamentarians, policy makers, businesses, trade unions, media, academics, NGOs, and others. This engagement of high level actors from both regions with expertise contributed to the reflection on the Summit’s themes and enriched the debate before the Summit.
The Santiago Summit builds up on six previous EU-LAC Summits held in Rio de Janeiro (1999), Madrid (2002), Guadalajara (2004), Vienna (2006), Lima (2008) and Madrid (2010).
