Statement of the Spokesperson on the today's explosion in Somalia

Text

Today's blast in Mogadishu is yet another attempt to disrupt Somalia's process towards democracy and state-building, following decades of unrest and civil war. We extend our condolences to the families of the victims.

Somalia has made genuine steps towards normalisation over the last few years and the upcoming electoral process will be key to a democratic universal suffrage in 2020.

The perpetrators behind the assaults are primarily attacking the Somali people's legitimate aspirations for a peaceful and positive future.

The EU is and will remain a staunch supporter of the building of a stable and democratic Somalia, benefitting its population and the region as a whole.
