HRVP Mogherini meets with Foreign Minister of Cuba, Bruno Rodriguez

Text

Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, met today with the Foreign Minister of Cuba, Bruno Rodriguez, in the margins of the UN General Assembly in New York. The meeting took place just after the European Commission proposed to the Council to sign the Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement and the High Representative asked the Council to repeal the European Union's common position on Cuba from 1996.

Federica Mogherini expressed her confidence that the institutional process towards the approval of both proposals will be swift and smooth, and invited Minister Rodriguez to attend the signing ceremony of the agreement in Brussels, once the procedures will be completed.

The HRVP and the Cuban Foreign Minister both affirmed the political will to strengthen cooperation between the European Union and Cuba, to reinforce the longstanding and deep cultural, economic and commercial relations, and to continue the engagement on human rights.

They exchanged views on the peace process in Colombia, in view of the signature of the peace agreement on 26 September in Cartagena, concluded during the negotiations that took place in Havana. The High Representative and the Minister also touched upon the political situation in Venezuela.
