EU-Mediterranean-Gulf Renewable Energy Conference - 09/10/2009

A Ministerial level conference on Renewable Energy Cooperation between the EU, the Mediterranean and the Gulf countries took place on 9 October 2009 in Brussels.The conference was hosted by the European Commission, with European Commissioners: Benita Ferrero-Waldner and (External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy); Andris Piebalgs (Energy) in attendance.

This occasion provided a unique opportunity to explore the scope for future co-operation on renewable energy with participation of Foreign and Energy Ministers from almost 60 countries, together with representatives from international organizations, industry, research institutes and international financial institutions. The Conference discussed challenges and possibilities for practical co-operation on policy frameworks and projects of common interest with the aim to facilitate the development of local renewable energy opportunities in Mediterranean and Gulf countries. The debate built on EU policy measures and experience in developing renewable energy sources and efforts to tackle climate change.

The following is the overview of the current/planned initiatives with the participating countries:

 For the Mediterranean region the conference will build upon:

- ongoing and planned initiatives, such as the Euro-Mediterranean energy market integration project (Med-Emip),

- the integration of electricity markets in the Maghreb;

- the project on energy efficiency cooperation (MedEnec);

- cooperation of the Euro-Mediterranean energy regulators (MedReg);

- the Action Plan for high priority renewable energy initiatives in Southern and Eastern Mediterranean Area project (REMAP),

- the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RECREE) in Cairo.

For the countries of the Gulf region:

The Conference explored the scope for future cooperation with the EU, stemming from the 19th EU-GCC Joint Council and Ministerial meeting held on 29April 2009 in Muscat, and the commitment to launch an EU-GCC clean energy network to facilitate cooperation in this area.
