Statement by High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini on Gabon

The official announcement of the election results has plunged Gabon into a deep crisis.

It is important that all parties eschew violence and call for calm. Any protest should be conducted peacefully, to prevent widespread unrest in the country; the law enforcement authorities should act responsibly.

Confidence in the election results can only be restored by a transparent verification, polling station by polling station.

The EU is in contact with its partners, in particular its African partners, with a view to facilitating a peaceful outcome to the crisis.
