Fourth Syrian Humanitarian Forum in Geneva (16/07/2012)

On 16th July, the fourth Director-level meeting of the Syrian Humanitarian Forum took place in Geneva. The EU, through the European Commission Office for Humanitarian Aid, ECHO, is one of the co-facilitators alongside OCHA, the OIC and the League of Arab States.

The Forum was launched in March 2012 in view of the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Syria and increasing flows of refugees from Syria into the neighbouring countries. It is the only platform between governments and main international agencies to exchange information and mobilise support for the humanitarian response.

In June, the Syrian Government accepted the Humanitarian Response Plan drawn up by OCHA. Now the main objectives are its implementation, access and the mobilisation of additional funds.

The European Institutions have so far provided € 43 million in humanitarian aid. Mr Claus Sørensen, Director General of ECHO, who was present in Geneva, announced an imminent increase of the funds from the European Union.
