The EU and Ukraine invest in creating new energy saving outlook and behaviour among children and youth (03/04/2012)

More than 2500 children all over the Ukraine participated in this year's creativity contest “Children for Clean Energy”. The contest organized by the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine (SAEE) aims to create a completely new energy saving outlook and behaviour among young people and children. Continuing cooperation with Ukraine in the areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources, the European Union provided financial support to organize the exhibition of the best children’s works and an award ceremony for winners.

On 6 April 2012 from 9.00 am to 6.00 pm the Exhibition of more the 300 best works participated in contest “Children for Clean Energy” will be held at the Ukrainian House (2, Khreschatik Street). The exhibition is free of charge and open to everyone interested. The award ceremony will gather in Kyiv more the 35 winners from different regions of Ukraine, from both regular and boarding schools.

“Our future, the future of Ukraine is with these non-indifferent, creative and active children,” stated Mykola Pashkevych, the Head of the SAEE, opening last year's award ceremony. The event is supported by the European Union within the framework of the Project “Capacity Building to the State Agency on Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine (SAEE)”.

Background information

The State Agency for Energy Efficiency holds the contest "Children for Clean Energy” for the 4th year in a row. It strives to attract a young generation to educational and practical activities related to energy saving and energy efficiency. In this way, the agency explains to youth why to save energy at home and why renewable energy is much better for the environment than traditional energy. The contest gathers talented children from different parts of the country and provides opportunities for the development of their creative abilities and professional identity. There are three categories in which winners are being selected: 1) the best drawing about energy saving, 2) the best motto and 3) the best handcrafted item made of waste. There are two age divisions: children from 6 to 11 years and children from 12 to 16 years.

The SAEE closely cooperates with European Union Delegation to Ukraine in the areas of energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Currently one of the major tasks on the agenda is to set up an appropriate institutional framework to sustain implementation of the measures agreed in the EU-Ukraine Association Agenda and the Energy Memorandum of Understanding in these areas.

In January 2012 the EU launched the technical assistance Project “Capacity Building of the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation in Ukraine” to strengthen the overall capacity of the SAEE to foster EU-Ukraine cooperation in the area. This project is as part of the Sector Budget Support Programme (SBSP) titled “Support to the implementation of Ukraine's Energy strategy in the area of energy efficiency and renewable sources of energy” signed by the EU and Ukraine in December 2009.
