Statement by High Representative Catherine Ashton on the pre-electoral situation in Ukraine (05/02/2010)

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission made today the following statement on the pre-electoral situation in Ukraine:

"I am following closely developments in Ukraine in the run up to the second round of presidential elections on Sunday. I welcome the commitment to the democratic process demonstrated by the Ukrainian people in the first round of elections in January. I call on all candidates to ensure that the will of the people can once more be expressed at the polls this Sunday. In the meantime I fully support the work of the election observers on the ground and of the International Election Observation Mission led by Ambassador Tagliavini".
