On the occasion of the 500th Anniversary of Thailand- Portugal relations in 2011, the Centre for European Studies at Chulalongkorn University, representing Chulalongkorn
University, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal, the Instituto do Oriente / Universidade Técnica in Lisbon and the Embassy of Portugal in Thailand will organize an international seminar "500 years of Thai-Portuguese Relations"
Contributions made at the seminar, namely presentations and interventions on
panel discussions in various topics will be published by Chulalongkorn University
in seminar proceedings both in English and Thai.

Founded in 1986, the Ma'alot Quintett can be numbered among leading international chamber music ensembles of today. The repertoire of the ensemble embraces compositions for wind quintet from the Viennese Classics to the present day, as well as arrangements specially prepared by Ulf-Guido Schäfer.
Following their founding, the Ma’alot Quintett soon achieved wide international recognition, winning four First prizes in major international chamber-music competitions, foremost among them First Prize in the ARD International Music Competition in Munich.

Classical music still has a relatively young tradition in Thailand. Therefore, it is all the more important to support young musicians. Within the framework of this chamber concert series the Goethe-Institut would like to offer a platform to student ensembles of different music schools and universities to present their skills. The auditorium used by the Thai-German Cultural Foundation and the Goethe-Institut provides the perfect location for chamber concerts because of its amplitude and acoustics as well as its two excellent grand pianos.

The French Embassy in Thailand is organizing La Fête 2012 for the 8th time in the past 9 years. This year, La Fête will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Alliance Française de Bangkok, founded in 1912, the co-organizer of the festival.
About 20 different cultural and artistic events will be presented over a period of 9 weeks. Some of these events are Thai, but they are mostly French; they cover many fields of creativity: modern circus, classical music, rock, DJ, contemporary dance, hip-hop, visual theatre, photography, cinema, fashion, etc.
The events will also be hosted by 6 other Thai cities: Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hua Hin, Koh Samui, Khon Kaen and Phuket.

This year, the annual French-Thai cultural festival "La Fête" will bring you the show of contemporary "nouveau cirque". The "Ieto" show was created in 2008 and involved two circus artists, Jonathan Guichard and Fnico Feldmann, making use of boards, ropes, sticks and some blocks. Flying jumps and tumbles, scaffolding balanced by counterweights as if by magic, Ieto's playful and enchanting universe will fascinate both young and old who will hold their breath while the two artists walk on barely visible ropes at great heights.

Contemporary design and the power of convention
The Goethe-Institut Thailand and the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IFA) present an exhibition by Prof. Volker Albus in cooperation with Crystal Design Center (CDC) and Bangkok University Gallery (BUG).
IFA and Curator Prof Volker Albus have prepared the exhibition "Somewhat different. Contemporary Design and the Power of Convention" which shows selected examples of this design phenomenon. The designs do not only provoke astonishment, but challenge one to reflect on general expectation, codes of behaviour as well as the referential context of firmly established notions, and to review traditional fixations.

Patirck Van Goethem, the Belgian countertenor works as a soloist with most distinguished conductors in the early music field such as Ton Koopman, rans Brüggen Masaaki Suzuki etc. He is guest at all the important early music festivals throughout European countries. In addition to his career as a concert singer, Patrick Van Goethem performs with his baroque ensemble the Flanders Baroque Consort of which he is founder, member and artistic advisor.
He will be joined by Thai vocalists Duangdao Chayasirisobhon and Mongkol Chayasirisobhon as well as harpsichord and piano collaborator, Dr Alberto Firrincieli of ABAC university.

The French Embassy in Thailand is organizing La Fête 2012 for the 8th time in the past 9 years. This year, La Fête will celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Alliance Française de Bangkok, founded in 1912, the co-organizer of the festival.
About 20 different cultural and artistic events will be presented over a period of 9 weeks. Some of these events are Thai, but they are mostly French; they cover many fields of creativity: modern circus, classical music, rock, DJ, contemporary dance, hip-hop, visual theatre, photography, cinema, fashion, etc.

16 contemporary artists from around the world will give their individual visions on the causes, consequences and current context of Aids, as well as ways of fighting it. The pieces presented offer a vision of Aids from the perspective of different countries on different continents that all experience the illness in one form or other.
TheArtAids Foundatoin will invite 10 internationally acclaimed artists who don't usually work on the subject of Aids to create specific pieces for the exhibition. A view of the illness by Pepe Espaliú, a Spanish artist who died from Aids in 1993, appears by way of an introduction.

Contemporary design and the power of convention
The Goethe-Institut Thailand and the Institute for Foreign Cultural Relations (IFA) present an exhibition by Prof. Volker Albus in cooperation with Crystal Design Center (CDC) and Bangkok University Gallery (BUG).
IFA and Curator Prof Volker Albus have prepared the exhibition "Somewhat different. Contemporary Design and the Power of Convention" which shows selected examples of this design phenomenon. The designs do not only provoke astonishment, but challenge one to reflect on general expectation, codes of behaviour as well as the referential context of firmly established notions, and to review traditional fixations.

The source of the Mae Kok river, an affluant of the Mekong, is located in Myanmar, in the mountains of the Daen Lao range, east of the Shan state. Artits Maija Albrecht, Kalle Berg, Matti Hintikka, Valpuri Kylmänen, Kuutti Lavonen, Tapani Mikkonen, Kaisu Sirviö and Miikka Vaskola showcase their latest works. All the artists use the same lithography workshop Helsinki Litho. They make their art independently, drawing on the traditions and potentials of the lithography technique. The exhibition also reflects the high, autonomous status of printmaking in contemporary art in Finland.

The Music College of Mahidol University is launching the production of Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss.
The three-act light-hearted operetta tells a story of a revenge taken by a Dr. Falke on a his best friend, Gabriel von Eisenstein for playing a practical joke on him three years ago. This operetta full of the disguises, tricks, and lovely tunes is considered one of the most performed opera around the world. And for this production the story is taken place in Bangkok, 2012 instead of in Vienna, 1890 with a little twist added to all the characters.

The dancer, choreographer and teacher, Gwen Rakotovao, will stage a preview of her solo show in the auditorium of Alliance française. While planning her show for Bangkok, Rakotovao started working on a new dance inspired by the poem “A une passante,” or “To a Woman Passing By,” by French writer Charles Baudelaire. She will also perform “Budda Jam”, where her humorous and whimsical portrait of an automaton is set to American composer Dorian Wallace’s music.

The exhibition in Nakhon Pathom shows works by 15 international artists, installations, paintings, photos, videos and objects. The projects aim is to explore phenomena of New Exoticism in Greater-Bangkok and Berlin. The street art festival BUKRUK/THAI-EUROPE CONNECTION is the first large-scale collaboration of Thailand and Europe in street art and illustration: 15 European artists and 11 Thais, all among the most talented and cutting-edge in their fields, will come together to paint live and exhibit their work.
The launch event on February 16 will take the form of a big street festival with the artists painting public walls in the centre of Bangkok, performances by indie bands and DJs from Thailand and Europe, and extreme sports demos.
An indoor exhibition in the form of a pop up store in the Bangkok Art & Culture Centre will display creations by all participating artists.

The Goethe-Institut is glad to arrange the second German Film Week in cooperation with its project partner Paragon Cineplex. Within 7 days, 7 German-speaking movies are shown – 7 movies providing an insight into the diversity of the German film scene. Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) has a Mediterranean flavour as Greek guest conductor Alkis Baltas leads the TPO in a performance of Nikos Skalkottas’ “The Sea” Ballet Suite for Orchestra. Also on the program, French oboe soloist Philippe Tondre will perform Strauss’ Oboe Concerto in D Major.

German Sound Artist Christina Kubisch will hold a lecture as part of the BACC 'Hear Here Exhibition'. The Lecture of Kubisch will be about the development of what today is defined as sound art from an European view. It is to compare her works from the last 40 years to that of other colleagues in the domain of sound art until today.

The exhibition in Nakhon Pathom shows installations, paintings, photos, videos and objects by 15 international artists. The projects aim is to explore phenomena of New Exoticism in Greater-Bangkok and Berlin. Their residents represent global changes on local scale, people from all over the world live here. 7 participating artists come from Berlin, 4 from Greater-Bangkok, 5 from China, France, Congo, Fiji and Tahiti.
