As neighbours the EU and Syria have a long tradition of strong economic and commercial relations. The EU has long been Syria's main trade partner.
In response to the violent repression of popular protest in Syria since March 2011, the Council of the European Union has introduced a number of restrictive measures against Syria including an import ban on Syrian crude oil and petroleum products as well as a number of export bans. The ongoing crisis in Syria, as well as the restrictive measures, is expected to have a significant impact on the levels of EU-Syria trade.
