An electoral expert mission funded by the European Commission arrives in Honiara to accompany the electoral process
The European Commission, in cooperation with other international donors, is engaged in accompanying the electoral cycle in the Solomon Islands
In this framework, the EC has contracted two international electoral experts, Mr. Jose Antonio de Gabriel, from Spain, and Mr. Michel Paternotre, from Belgium, who will follow on the current electoral process. The team will meet with Government and electoral officials, candidates and representatives from political parties, with civil society and international and domestic observers’ groups. They will conduct a comprehensive follow up of the electoral process.
his mission will look at aspects such as the legal framework, the work of the election administration, the role of State institutions and civil society, the campaign and media framework, the voters’ registration procedures, the polling procedures, etc. In their work, the experts will use international standards for democratic elections as benchmarks.
Following the conclusion of its mission, which will last for two months, the team of experts will produce recommendations for further EC cooperation in the field of electoral cycle support.
