Technical cooperation facility will strengthen effective delivery of EU aid in Sierra Leone (31/07/2012)

Brussels, 4 June 2012 – Today, the European Union has decided to establish a technical cooperation facility for Sierra Leone. The facility will add to the effective design, implementation and monitoring of projects funded by the EU to ensure maximum impact and efficiency of aid allocation to the country. Concretely, the EU will support training sessions, local studies and seminars linked to development interventions, monitoring, evaluation practices, and financial management.

The facility will also support awareness-raising activities, such as conferences and seminars on specific topics of interest to key development actors in Sierra Leone, so that they are better informed about development and trade-related issues and EU policies. Finally, looking forward, the facility will support the preparation of the future development programming.

"The main objective of this support is to contribute to the effective implementation of development cooperation between the government and people of Sierra Leone and the European Union," said the Head of Delegation of the European Union to Sierra Leone, Jean-Pierre Reymondet-Commoy.

Financed with a total allocation of €4 million, the focus of this cooperation is in line with Sierra Leone’s Agenda for Change and the ultimate aim to contribute towards poverty reduction.

Background

The Technical Cooperation Facility IV, financed under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) with a financial envelope of €4 million is a continuation of a similar programme that has been running since 2009. EU cooperation with Sierra Leone provides a total of €301 million under the 10th European Development Fund for the period 2008-2013. Additional support is available through regional programmes and through additional financing mechanisms from the global EU budget.
