The Delegation of the European Union to Senegal opens the Second Forum for Electromobility in Africa
The Africa Electromobility Forum is an annual flagship event that aims to support the development of a community of regional actors committed to sustainable and electric urban mobility in African cities. In 2023, a successful first edition took place in Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), bringing together around a hundred delegates representing more than 20 cities, investors and businesses from the African continent. The Forum is jointly organized by the SOLUTIONSplus project, funded by the EU's Horizon 2020 Research and Development Program, and by the United Nations Energy Program's Electric Mobility and Investment Support Platform in Africa. 'Environment. This year, the second edition of the Forum focuses on the electrification of public transport, innovative financing mechanisms to enable low-carbon mobility, gender inclusion, the development of innovative vehicles, training needs and adequate policies to support electromobility. Following the first day providing an overview of electromobility in Africa, representatives of public transport authorities and operators will benefit from three days of training on the electrification of public transport. The deployment of the electric Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Dakar will constitute a central subject of the Forum's discussions.
On the occasion of the launch of the Forum, Mr. Simon Vanden Broeke, Connectivity and Sustainable Investment Team Leader at the European Union Delegation, declared: “Dakar is ideally placed to host exchanges between African decision-makers on the development of efficient, comfortable and electric transport systems. With the deployment of electric BRT, the city is playing a pioneering role in West Africa in terms of urban mobility and the fight against pollution. I am delighted that the European Union is supporting such an important dialogue between representatives of African cities on sustainable urban mobility. This dialogue is part of the Global Gateway strategy and a continuation of Team Europe's investments to finance the improvement of Dakar's public transport network and the BRT." Ms. Aminata Maiga, United Nations Resident Coordinator in Senegal, highlighted the transformative opportunity represented by electric mobility in Africa, offering "the possibility of reviewing traditional transport systems, reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and create new opportunities for economic growth and social development. Mr. Thierno Birahim, Director General of CETUD, welcomed the “political will in Senegal which takes us towards green and inclusive mobility” and underlined the importance of making “the qualitative leap to make African cities viable and livable”.

About the Global Gateway strategy and Team Europe in Senegal
The “Global Gateway” strategy is synonymous with sustainable and reliable connections that serve citizens and the planet. This European strategy aims to develop smart, clean and secure links in digital, energy and transport and to strengthen health, education and research systems around the world. Between 2021 and 2027, Team Europe will mobilize up to €300 billion in investments for sustainable, high-quality projects, taking into account the needs of partner countries and ensuring lasting benefits for local communities. The very first major milestone under the Global Gateway strategy was the Africa-Europe investment package, with around €150 billion of investment dedicated to strengthening cooperation with African partners. In 2023, Team Europe joined forces with Senegal to invest more than 320 million euros to support the modernization of Dakar's public transport network. This Global Gateway project, which supports the efforts of the Senegalese government in the implementation of its sustainable urban mobility strategy, is supported by the European Investment Bank, the European Commission, the French Development Agency (AFD) and KfW to the account of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development. Still within the framework of the Global Gateway strategy, the European Union is also providing a grant of 7 million euros to finance equipment for the Dakar BRT, in support of the financial support mobilized by Proparco, Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund (EAIF) , PIDG TA, Meridiam and FONSIS.
