Commissioner Georgieva intervenes at High Level event on the Sahel (21/02/2013)

On 20 February, European Commissioner for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response Kristalina Georgieva intervened at the High Level event "The Situation in the Sahel, One Year On" hosted by the WFP in Rome. The Commissioner underscored that the early response undertaken a year ago by governments, agencies and donors has been remarkably successful, but also stressed that "our long term agenda needs to be focused on strengthening the coping capacity of communities and countries". To date, the international community has provided US$1.2 billion in assistance to around 10 million people across eight countries in the Sahel and has helped avert a humanitarian catastrophe.
A photographic exhibition on the Sahel region, hosted by "Spazio Europa" in Rome, was also inaugurated on 20 February and will be open to the public until 6 March.
