Welcome

Ambassador Ioannis Giogkarakis-Argyropoulos

I am pleased to welcome you to the website of the Delegation of the European Union to Papua New Guinea.

The European Union (EU) was born as a project for durable peace soon after the worst war in human history and evolved as a unique economic and political union of 28 European countries which share and uphold common values and promote a global agenda. Today the EU contributes to international peace, security, sustainable development of the Earth, solidarity and respect among peoples, free and fair trade, eradication of poverty and the protection of human rights, as well as the observance of international law in line with the principles of United Nations Charters. Among others, EU has gradually become the largest trading block and a major player in supporting peace and security worldwide.

Since the opening of the Delegation in 1977, the European Union has worked in partnership with Papua New Guinea to develop and deploy its human and natural resources for the betterment of peoples' lives, as well as for the formulation of common positions and approaches in regional and international fora.

Over these years, the EU-PNG relation evolved into a mature political, economic and social partnership, which is a valuable model of fruitful dialogue within the region and beyond. Currently, the EU looks forward to fostering a stronger partnership by reinforcing the political dialogue and international cooperation, by tapping all potential benefits from the 2011 bilateral trade agreement, and by intensifying our work on development cooperation. This partnership may be reinforced further in areas such as promotion of peace, security and stability; human rights; public financial management; environment; renewable energy, innovation and research; culture; and regional integration.

My aim as the new Ambassador of the European Union to Papua New Guinea is to continue raising awareness and to promote and uphold the values and interests of the EU, as well as to support the strengthening and deepening of the EU-PNG partnership.

I am very pleased for your interest in the Delegation's website and I trust that you will find the information useful and enjoy learning about the European Union and its work and relationship with Papua New Guinea. I also look forward to receiving your feedback. Just click on the link!
