Let’s comics - "A comic competition on multicultural societies", EuroMed youth promote dialogue (05/08/2010)
On 29 July, the Italian NGO COSV, Najdeh, Insan and Samandal Comics organisation organised 29July at the Youth Cultural Centre in Shatila Camp, the final event of the project "A comic competition on multicultural societies", in the presence of Ms Cecile Abadie, Chargée d'Affaires at the Delegation of the European Union to Lebanon.
The project, which is funded by the European Union, aimed to promote intercultural exchange and participative dialogue between youth from different social groups in Lebanon and in the Euro-Mediterranean region through the use of comics as a form of communication and intercultural dialogue. In Lebanon, it targeted Lebanese students, Palestinians and migrants.
Under the supervision of qualified trainers, the Lebanese, Palestinian and migrant youth participated in workshops on how to draw a comic story on the theme of "multicultural societies". The comics produced during the workshops will be included in a special publication which will be prepared with the help of Italian comics' editors.
Thereto, the best comics have been included in Samandal comics' magazine published in Beirut.
A three-fold comics' competition was organised on the subject of "multicultural societies":
- One competition among the Lebanese students, Palestinians and migrants who participated in the training workshops on comics.
- A second competition that was open to the Lebanese young artists from all over the country.
- A third competition addressed to Euro-Mediterranean youth already skilled in comics.
A joint workshop saw the participation of participants from the different categories who produced a common story on intercultural dialogue. Moreover, a website (letscomics.org) was created in order to establish a network between all participants. A forum for discussion was also opened on the website for the exchange of ideas and comments.
At the end of the event where all participants exhibited their works, the winners of the competitions were awarded prizes. Six Lebanese, Palestinian and migrant youth received laptops, cameras and collections of comics, two young Lebanese professionals won a trip to Italy to attend one of the most important European comics fairs "Luccacomics", which will be held next October, and six Euro-Mediterranean participants were prized with a trip to Lebanon to participate in the final workshop and attend the final event.
