High level EU representatives visit 4 Jordanian Universities (09/05/2011)
(Amman, 9 May 2011) In the framework of activities to commemorate Europe Day, the EU Ambassador, Mrs Joanna Wronecka, and high level representatives from EU members states in Jordan visited the universities of Al Hussein (Ma'an), Al Hashemite University (Zarqa) the University of Jordan (Amman) and Yarmouk University on 3rd, 4th 5th and 8th of May respectively.
Participating in these visits were representatives of France, Italy, Germany, UK and the Netherlands.
A mini-fair was set up in each university to offer information on scholarships, exchange programmes, educational and internship opportunities in Europe, and European languages programmes available in Jordan. The following institutions participated in the mini fairs: the British Council, the Societá Dante Alighieri, the Campus France office, the Netherlands Institute, The Goethe Institute, The German Academic Exchange Service, Embassies of Italy, Germany and Sweden and the National Tempus Office. The participation and response of Jordanian students was very positive.
The EU Ambassador gave a lecture in each of the Universities on the theme "EU-Jordan relations". The lecture was followed by questions from students and academic staff. and replies from the EU representatives. The participants highlighted the importance of the relations between the European Union and its neighbours in the current regional context and in view of the reforms initiatives in the region.
The EU representatives held meetings with the Presidents of the Universities as well as with selected faculty staff and students during which the needs and problems faced by Jordanian Universities, as well as their progress and future perspectives and challenges were discussed.
Visits to other Jordanian Universities will be organised in the coming months.
The European Union offers Jordan several cooperation instruments in the fields of research and higher education. These include Tempus, Erasmus Mundus, the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and development and others.
