The Accompanying Measures for Sugar Protocol Countries (AMS)

The Reform of the EU Common Market Organization for Sugar and the 36% cut in prices by October 2009 resulted in significant losses in foreign exchange earnings and in significant socio and economic impacts on the Sugar Protocol countries, including Belize.  The European Commission therefore announced an eight year aid scheme to assist Sugar Protocol Countries in the transformation process.

Access of Belizean sugar to the European market is now regulated by the CARIFORUM - European Union Economic Partnership Agreement that was signed on October 15, 2008.

Under the AMS programme, Belize benefits from an allocation of €46.5 million for the period 2007-2010 from the Accompanying Measures for Sugar Protocol countries (AMSP).
