27/08/2015 - EU urges reinstating moratorium following recent executions in Autonomous Region of Kurdistan in Iraq
With no executions carried out in the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan
since 2008, the Kurdistan Region Government (KRG) has set a progressive
example in a troubled region, and demonstrated that it is possible to
ensure a high level of security without resorting to capital punishment.
The European Union Delegation to Iraq opened a liaison Office in Erbil to support the current activities of the delegation in humanitarian fields and achieve the stability, progress and reconstruction by coordination between the EU and UN, non- donor and NGOs with KRG and local governments.
19/08/2015 - The European Union supports humanitarian action
The European Union is committed to protecting humanitarian workers and supports World Humanitarian Day every year on 19 August. Today marks the day in 2003 when 22 humanitarians lost their lives in the bombing of the UN Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq. It is a day to honour the brave men and women who risk their lives while they provide help to people who suffer and to draw attention to the increasing dangers faced by humanitarian workers.
For candidate countries (Albania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey) and potential candidates (Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo), the EU provides both financial and technical support.
