Calendar of EU Events in Georgia

Ambassador Fredrik Löjdquist, Special Envoy of the Swedish EU Presidency for Georgia, kindly invites you to a press conference at SAS Radisson (Ball room 2) at 16.00 on Friday December 11, 2009.

The press conference will be dedicated to the results and achievements in EU-Georgia relations during the current Swedish EU Presidency, not least as regards implementing the Eastern Partnership A short overview of the results and the challenges of the Swedish EU-presidency in general will also be offered, including the consequences for Georgia of the new Lisbon Treaty.

Recognising that media plays a very important role in the protection of human rights, the Delegation of the European Union would like to mark 10 December - Human Rights' Day by presenting an EU-funded media survey ''What do Georgian public expects from the media?" carried out by the Caucasus Research and Resource Centers of the Eurasia Partnership Foundation . The event will be opened by Head of the EU Delegation Ambassador Per Eklund . The presentation will be made by Mr Koba Turmanidze, Director of the Caucasus Research Resource Center (CRRC) Georgia.

Media is invited to the signing ceremony of three Financing Agreements between the European Commission and the Government of Georgia by Giorgi Baramidze , Vice Prime Minister and State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Issues, Kakha Baindurashvili , Minister of Finance, and Ambassador Per Eklund, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Georgia. The Financing Agreements foresee:

  1. Euro 2 million  to support the implementation of the Government's policy on child care, protection, and welfare indicated at the Government's Children's Action Plan for 2008-2011
  2. Euro19 million to support Vocational Education and Training
  3. Euro 8.4 million for Twinning and Technical Assistance Facility to support  the implementation of the EU-Georgia European Neighbourhood Policy Action Plan.

Media is invited to the opening of a EU-funded civil society seminar on Media Freedom  to be organised in the context of the human rights dialogue between

Georgia and the European Union initiated in 2008. The first civil society seminar will be opened by Ambassador Per Eklund, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia, Ambassador Fredrik Löjdquist , Special Envoy of the Swedish EU Presidency for Georgia and Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Nalbandov .  Results of  the Georgia Comprehensive Media Research conducted by the Caucauss Resource and Research Centres and funded by the EU will be released.

Journalists are invited to the presentation of an European Union-funded project ''Srengthening the media's role as a watchdog institution in Georgia." The project is implemented by the Eurasia Partnership Foundation. Head of the EC Delegation Ambassador Per Eklund will make opening remarks. The project will assist the promotion of media freedom, development of regional broadcasters and investigative journalism. Regular meetings with all the inerested parties are foreseen during the lifetime of the project.

Activities foreseen in the framework of the project will be presented, including the etablishment of the Media Legal Defence Centre as well as the initiatives aimed at  the development of the Association of Regional Broadcasters. The Georgian Young Lawyers' Association and the Regional Broadcasters' Association are also participating in the project.

Minister of Finance of Georgia Kakha Baindurashvili and Head of Delegation of the European Commission Ambassador Per Eklund will open a media event at Radisson SAS to present taxpayer survey under the European Union funded project “Support to Tax Administration Reform”, being implemented by Hulla & Co. Human Dynamics KG (Vienna). The project is helping the Revenue Service to raise public awareness of the rights and obligations of taxpayers in Georgia and to implement a European style taxpayer service. A brief presentation of the results of the Survey undertaken by Gorbi and the reforms implemented by the Revenue Service in response to taxpayer’s wishes, will be made by the Revenue Service.

Mr. George Tugushi, Public Defender, will hold the presentation on the priorities of Public Defender’s Office, the vision of the newly appointed Public Defender and the progress and successes being achieved by the mentioned project.

Media is invited to the opening of a two-day Conference Prevention of Torture: what does it mean and how well do we do it in South Caucasus?” with a particular focus on Georgia in light of the recent designation of the Public Defender of Georgia as a National Preventive Mechanism (NPM) according to the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture. The conference is held in the context of an EU funded project ‘Prevention of Torture in Georgia’ implemented by Prison Reform International. This project, reflecting the high priority placed by the EU on protection of human rights and the fight against torture, seeks to assist the Government in implementing its torture prevention commitments under the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). The newly appointed Public Defender George Tugushi will present his vision for a new mechanism to prevent torture in Georgia, including the potential role of civil society. Recommendations will be sought from participants as to further changes and resources needed for an OPCAT compliant mechanism to be established.The Conference will be opened by Public Defender Mr. George Tugushi and Robert Liddell, First Counsellor at the Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia

One-day workshop to discuss draft Mid-term Vocational Education Strategy of Georgia for 2009-2012 organised with the support of the European Union will be held at the Ministry of Education and Science.

Mr. Nika Gvaramia, Minister of Education and Science will open the event in which representatives of relevant Ministries including the Ministry of  Economic Development,  Finance, Agriculture, Corrrections, Health and Social Protection as well as parliamentary Committees will be participating.

The Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia, in cooperation with State Minister for European Integration  Issues, is inviting the media for the opening ceremony of an event promoting Eastern Partnership on 21 September, Monday, at 14:00 to the Marriott Tbilisi Hotel Ball Room. 

The opening by Ambassador Per Eklund , Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia and Tamar Beruchashvili, Deputy State Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Issues, will be followed by presentations by the officials from the European Commission External Relations Directorate General in Brussels:

Presentations and discussions and Q&A, will cover a range of topics, including:
- goals and structures of the Eastern Partnership, interaction with ENP
- bilateral and multilateral cooperation
- flagship projects, Comprehensive Institutional Building programme;
- financing of the Eastern Partnership and Mid Term Review of ENPI, etc.

Award ceremony of the best Georgian undergraduate and Master's students for the academic year 2007/2008 will be held under the European Union-funded Erasmus Mundus External Cooperation Window for Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. The ceremony will be followed by presentations from the project's beneficiaries. Giorgi Khubua , Rector of the Tbilisi State University and Ambassador Per Eklund, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia will participate in the award ceremony.

In the framework of “Expo-Kakheti” exhibition centre, EU-Georgia Business Council (EUGBC), with the support of the European Union, is organizing a regional seminar on “What Georgian Exporters Should Know to Access EU Market”. The seminar will take place on July 31st from 14:00 to 17:00 at 77 Alazani Ave., Telavi. 

Goal of the seminar is to inform Georgian businessmen on specific issues regarding export to EU market and raise awareness on the following subjects:

  1. European Economic Area;
  2. Tariff and non-tariff barriers;
  3. EU’s General Systems of Preferences (GSP+) for Georgia;
  4. EU-Georgia potential Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement;
  5. Online EU help-desk for the third country exporters;
  6. Importance of food safety system and its role in export development.

Human Rights Centre (Georgia), Armenian Helsinki Association (Armenia) and Institute for Reporters Freedom and Safety (Azerbaijan) invites representatives of the media, international community and NGOs to the lauch of the South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders which unites 30 well-established human rights NGOs, 10 from each respective country.

South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders seeks to facilitate the development of a safe and enabling environment for human rights defenders in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia. In the Caucasus region, including the South Caucasus, human rights defenders often face serious challenges and persecution for their activities. A country where a human rights defender is not safe from persecution and harassments for his or her activities, the liberty and rights of each human being is under serious threat. Therefore, the creation and effective functioning of similar Networks is of utmost importance for building up a vibrant civil society and the establishment of a state based on respect for and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Setting up of South Caucasus Network of Human Rights Defenders is supported with a funding from the European Union.

Deputy Minister of Justice of Georgia Jabmul Ebanoidze, Head of the Civil Registry Agency Giorgi Vashadze and the Head of Operations Section of the European Commission Delegation to Georgia Martin Klaucke will take part in the handover of supplies for the Production of e-Passports in Georgia.

The European Union and Georgia worked together to lay the foundation for a modernized system of issuance of electronic Passports from 2010. At the end of this first phase, the project delivered and installed supplies for the production of e-Passports. The new system includes equipment and software for electronic signatures, fingerprints, face recognition, as well as equipment and software for document verification.

Journalists are invited to the presentation of the Caucasus Barometer - research which, under the European Union funding ,  has surveyed Georgia's social, economic and political developments.  The presentation will offer insights into the findings and the scope of the survey, while also answering the following questions:  what determines quality in surveys? And how is such data collected? And how can it be used constructively in public discussions? The project was implemented by the Caucasus Research Resource Centers, a programme of  the Eurasia Partnership Foundation.

The presentation to be given by Koba Turmanidze and Hans Gutbrod from the Caucasus Research Resource Centers (CRRC) will be opened by Per Eklund, Ambassador, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia.

Journalists are invited to the opening of a workshop on the Prevention and surveillance of trans-boundary animal diseases in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia funded by the European Union

The workshop will bring together representatives of the state veterinary services from the three South Caucasus countries. It is of special importance given the cases of African swine fever in various countries. Prevention and surveillance is of special significance in the context of animal diseases and require effective and coordinated trans-boundary cooperation.

Journalists are invited to the opening of a two-day conference dedicated to the European Union funded project Reform of the Official Statistics in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia – Statistics 10. The European Union has allocated over € 1 in the framework of this project to develop international standards in the official statistics.

Irakli Gchechiladze, Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Gregor Pantsulaia, Chairman of the Georgian Department of Statistics will open the conference.

Live video conference for the Georgian media will be organised at the EC Delegation premises to coincide with the press conference to be held by Commissioner for Extrenal Relations and the European Neighbourhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner in Brussels on the occasion of the official publication of ENP Progress Reports for the Neighbourhood  countries, including Georgia .
For Georgia this is the second Progress Report. The first one was published in April last year.

Today, on 9 April at 17:30 the EU Special Representative Peter Semneby, Presidency of the EU Czech Ambassador Ivan Jestrab and Charge d'Affairs of the  Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia Francois Massoulier will hold a press conference at the Tbilisi Marriott Ball Room.


An opening ceremony of the interconnection netwok infrustructure will be held in the framework of the EU-funded 'Black Sea Interconnection' project. The ceremony is organised by the State Ministry of European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Issues, the Ministry of Education and Science and the Georgian Research and Education Networking Association -GRENA.

The project foresees the establishment of  network between the education and research institutions of the South Caucasus and the pan-European Research Network GEANT to enable the researches to cooperate with their colleagues in the spheres requiring complex data (e.g. climate change); also, to get access to unique equipment in the leading centres of the world. The project budget is approximately € 2 million. Most of the funding comes through the EC 7th Framework Programme.

Journalists are invited to the launch of a Georgia Pocket Tax Book drafted with assistance from Ernst & Young LLC and the Human Dynamics Support to the Tax Administration project, funded by the European Union. This easy to read introduction to the tax laws of Georgia has been developed on behalf of the Revenue Service to support decisions of foreign business to invest in Georgia . Mr. Kakha Baindurashvili, Minister of Finance and Ambassador Per Eklund, Head of Delegation of the European Commission to Georgia will make opening remarks during the event.

Journalists are invited to a handover ceremony of 12 vehicles provided to the Public Defender's Office by the European Union . The vehicles are intended to support the mobility and outreach of the staff and thus further improve the institutional capacity of the Public Defender’s Office.
