First Counsellor Maurizio Cellini, Head of the Economic, Commercial and Trade Section at the European Union Delegation to Canada, joined an open table discussion on 10 April in Calgary, which focused on the EU-Canada negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

15/04/13 - Young Architects of Spain coming to Canada
"Young Architects of Spain" - a travelling exhibit showcasing the extraordinary work of several emerging Spanish architects - is coming to Canada. The official opening (featuring a lecture “on reuse” by Iñaqui Carnicero) takes place on April 25 at Carleton University, Azrieli School of Architecture. The exhibition runs through May 15.

The 6th German Language Filmfest gets underway on 18 April with the screening of Austrian film “Die Wand
[401 KB] ” (The Wall) by Julian Pölsler. Germany will present "Die Kriegerin" (The Warrior) on 20 April, followed by Swiss film "Der Verdingbub" (The Foster Boy) on 25 April.

09/04/13 - European book club to host discussion session with Polish Canadian author
Award-winning Polish Canadian author Eva Stachniak will present her latest book "The Winter Palace: A Novel of Catherine the Great" at the 17 April European book club. The event is organized in collaboration with the Ottawa chapter of the European National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC).

02/04/13 - Going Green conference at Palais des congrès de Montréal
The European Union organized a day-long conference on 20 March that looked at the greening of economies as a growing global trend. The conference offered an opportunity for Canadians and Europeans to share best practices and discuss ways of enhancing environmental cooperation.

The EU Delegation to Canada was among the 160 exhibitors at the 19th annual Travel & Vacation Show at the Ottawa Convention Centre 9-10 March.

European Union First Counsellor Maurizio Cellini, Head of the Economic, Commercial and Trade Section, led a delegation of diplomats representing 23 EU Member State Embassies on a trade mission to Toronto on 5 March.

05/03/13 - EU Delegation at Student Travel Expo in Montreal
Hundreds of Canadian students attended the 22nd edition of the Study and Go Abroad fair in Montreal to learn more about study opportunities in Europe. It was an excellent opportunity for European Union Delegation representatives to meet young professionals and their families to discuss study and career options in the European Union.

04/03/13 - EU Chargé d'affaires Manfred Auster on official visit to Iqaluit, Nunavut
European Union Chargé d'affaires Manfred Auster travelled to Iqaluit 25-27 February to meet with Nunavut government officials, Inuit organizations and high school students. The visit is part of ongoing efforts to reach out to Canadians in all corners of the country.

15/02/13 - European book club 20 February
The European book club returns for another exciting season, this year in partnership with the Ottawa Public Library. The first session gets underway Wednesday, 20 February with Aurorarama, a novel by French author Jean Christophe Valtat.
Educated at Ecole Normale Superieure and the Sorbonne, Mr. Valtat lives in Paris and teaches comparative literature. He has written short stories and novels, in addition to award-winning radio-plays and a movie, which he also co-directed.

07/02/13 - Bright Nights: The Baltic-Nordic Film Festival begins 8 February
The third annual edition of Bright Nights: The Baltic-Nordic Film Festival gets underway 8 February and runs through 1 March. The festival opens with the screening of the Swedish film Simon and the Oakes (Simon och ekarna) and features a broad selection of contemporary films from Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

For a second consecutive year, staff at the European Union Delegation to Canada successfully organized a food drive to benefit the Ottawa Food Bank.

On 10 December, the European Union and the Canada-Europe Parliamentary Association jointly celebrated the awarding of the 2012 Nobel Peace Prize to the European Union with a reception at the Government Conference Centre in Ottawa.

European Union Ambassador Matthias Brinkmann and representatives of EU diplomatic missions welcomed European cinema lovers to the 27th annual European Union Film Festival on 14 November. The EU Film Festival Opening Gala also included speeches by Irish Ambassador Ray Bassett and Cypriot General Consul Jacovos Giragosian.

European Union Ambassador Matthias Brinkmann made an official visit to Halifax, Nova Scotia, on 22 October. The visit included meetings with Premier Darrell Dexter, the Lieutenant Governor J.J. Grant, Fisheries and Aquaculture Deputy Minister Rosalind Penfound, and the Honorary Consuls of the EU Member States based in Halifax.

Sixty-two years ago on 9 May, French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman proposed a new model of political cooperation for Europe, in a bid to make wars among European nations unthinkable.His vision was the creation of a supranational European institution that would manage pooled coal and steel production (the European Coal and Steel Community). Schuman’s proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.

Ottawa - The Network of European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC) is holding its first book club on 22 February at Saint Paul University.
On this occasion, literature enthusiasts will have the chance to hear about and discuss We are doing fine (Es geht uns gut), a prized post-war novel by Austrian author Arno Geiger. The book examines the life of three generations of a Viennese family. Born in 1968, Geiger is the recipient of the 2005 German Book Prize for We are doing fine.

The Slovak Embassy in Ottawa hosted on 11 October the release of a new bilingual book of photographs taken by award-winning Slovak photographer Jozef Mýtny during the Nežná Revolúcia - or the "Velvet Revolution of 1989."

Mr. Tomás Dupla del Moral, Director for the Americas, made his first official visit to Canada 25-29 September 2011.Mr. Dupla del Moral's visit marked the beginning of negotiations to renew EU-Canada relations under a new pact called the Strategic Partnership Agreement (SPA). The two-day official trip included stops in Ottawa and Quebec City where he participated in a series of high-level meetings with both provincial and federal authorities.
