The EU Team has won the Embassies and Foreign Missions Challenge Cup in last weekend's Ottawa Dragon Boat Race – the biggest of its kind in North America. This was the EU Team's first time participating in the landmark annual event. The EU Team is comprised of representatives of the EU Delegation and the Embassies of Austria, Belgium, Portugal and Romania, Europeans living in Canada and Canadian friends.

Mr. Klaus Hänsch, former President of the European Parliament, offered his insight into the outcome of May's European Parliament elections at an event at Carleton University on 2 June. In his view, a wide number of reasons led to the relative increase in votes for fringe parties. No single explanation can be given since the phenomena cannot be attributed to a homogenous group of Member States, for example Eurogroup or Schengen members, he added.

European Union Ambassador Marie-Anne Coninsx and 23 Heads of Mission of European Union Member States met with the Honourable Kathleen Wynne, Premier of Ontario, and cabinet ministers on 12 February during their visit to Queen’s Park. This is a historic first joint official visit by the EU Heads of Mission to the Canadian Provinces and the first in a series planned for this year. Ontario was selected as the first Province, given its strategic importance in the Canadian federation, economic importance nationally and trade relevance for the EU-Canada relationship and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA).

The 28th edition of the European Union Film Festival (EUFF) was officially launched on 5 November at a media lunch hosted by the European Union Delegation to Canada.  The festival runs from 14 November to 1 December. This year, the EUFF presents films from 27 European Union Member States, all Ottawa premieres. Two other editions of the European Union Film Festival will be held in Toronto (14-27 November) and in Vancouver (22 November - 5 December).

The European book club returns for another exciting season, this year in partnership with the Ottawa Public Library. The first session gets underway Wednesday, 20 February with Aurorarama, a novel by French author Jean Christophe Valtat.

Educated at Ecole Normale Superieure and the Sorbonne, Mr. Valtat lives in Paris and teaches comparative literature. He has written short stories and novels, in addition to award-winning radio-plays and a movie, which he also co-directed.
