The 4th EU-Belarus Interim Phase meeting on modernisation issues took place in Minsk (19/11/2014)
On 19 November 2014, in Minsk, the fourth EU-Belarus Interim Phase meeting on modernisation issues took place. The aim of the Interim Phase is to determine the best future form of cooperation between the EU and the Belarusian Government on modernisation issues.
The meeting was led by Deputy Foreign Minister of Belarus Alena Kupchyna and Gunnar Wiegand, Director for Russia, Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, Regional Cooperation and OSCE at the European External Action Service, and comprised representatives from Directorates General for Education and Culture and Regional Development of the European Commission.
The discussions today were preceded by talks with civil society experts yesterday, and focused on education, social reforms and regional development.
It was agreed that the next meeting will take place early 2015 in Brussels.
During the visit, Director Gunnar Wiegand also met with the foreign minister of Belarus and the diplomatic adviser of the president to discuss issues of EU-Belarus relations and the Eastern Partnership.
Director Wiegand also met relatives of political prisoners as well as human rights defenders during his stay.
