EU Delegation and Brussels headquarters staff show solidarity with Albanians affected by snow emergency (24/02/2012)
Tirana, 23 January 2012
The Delegation of the European Union to Albania, its staff and their Brussels colleagues have provided emergency food supplies to remote areas in Albania isolated by the recent heavy snowfalls.
Food supplies provided through personal donations from the staff of the EU Delegation and the country team responsible for Albania at the European Commission's Brussels headquarters were delivered today to villages in need in Albania.
1.3 tonnes of food supplies purchased with the EU staff's donations were delivered to the villages of Arren in Kukes Qark and Lajthiza in Lezha Qark.
Following activation of the European Commission Humanitarian Office's Monitoring and Information Centre, Luxembourg provided a helicopter especially suited to reaching isolated areas. This helicopter was used to make two of the five flights necessary to deliver the supplies, and three flights were made by helicopters of Albania's Ministry of Defence.
In addition, through an emergency assistance project reallocation the EU Delegation is providing relief packages with food items to 57 families with disabled children in the communes of Qender, Lunik, Stebleve, Stravaj and Rrajca. These relief packages are being supplied as part of an EU-funded project supporting children with disabilities in the Librazhd region. Delivery of the packages began yesterday and will be completed by Monday.
