Tirana, 24 January 2012
The Steering Committee Meeting of the €2.3 million EU-funded project "Consolidation of the Justice System in Albania - EURALIUS" took place today in Tirana. EURALIUS is one of key assistance projects provided by the European Union to assist the Albanian Ministry of Justice and institutions of the justice system to develop an independent, impartial, efficient, professional, transparent and modern justice system, and thus contribute to the restoring of people’s confidence in their institutions and to the consolidation of democracy and rule of law in Albania. EURALIUS is implemented by the Spanish Ministry of Justice in consortium with the Italian High Council of the Judiciary for a 30-month period.
During the meeting the Head of the European Union Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Ettore Sequi highlighted that: "Justice Reform is a top priority, key to the country’s integration aspirations and therefore an area the EU pays great attention to. It is important to see comprehensive and convincing progress in this key priority for Albania to progress in the EU Integration path and to demonstrate that the country has institutions able to exercise democratic governance and protect fundamental rights."
EURALIUS is one project part of the generous assistance provided by the European Union to Albania. The European Union has been allocating in the last 15 years almost 100 million Euros to the Albanian justice system with the provision of courts buildings, offices for judges and prosecutors, prisons and reintegration centres, legislation, trainings and education, and equipment for the Albanian justice institutions with the objective to increase the quality of services delivered to Albanian citizens.
Justice reform is one of the crucial key priorities of the European Commission Opinion on Albania's application to European Union Membership. The European Union will continue to support Albania's reforms in this sector and has planned several additional millions of assistance for the upcoming years, including the construction of a new Palace of Justice in Tirana.
