Political framework

Africa and Europe are interconnected, bound together by history, culture, geography, a common future, as well as by a community of values: respect for human rights, freedom, equality, solidarity, justice, the rule of law and democracy as enshrined in the relevant international agreements and in the constitutive texts of our respective Unions. During the Africa-EU Summit of 2007 in Lisbon, eighty heads of State or Government from Africa and the EU took the Africa-EU relationship to a new, strategic level. The EU went beyond development aid and identified Africa and the African Union as a strategic political partner on a broad number of thematic issues of mutual interest in Africa, Europe, and globally.
