EU SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE MEETS NEW HIGH PEACE COUNCIL CHAIR (23/04/2012)
Today, EU Special Representative to Afghanistan and Head of Delegation, Ambassador Vygaudas Ušackas called on Mr. Salahuddin Rabbani to congratulate him on his appointment as Chair of the High Peace Council.
Ambassador Ušackas reiterated EU support for an Afghan-led peace process and expressed his appreciation for the work of the High Peace Council. He stated that "the EU welcomes Afghan leadership of an inclusive peace process. The EU is ready to support the High Peace Council in furthering a political settlement that preserves and extends the progress made in recent years towards international human rights standards."
Ambassador Ušackas outlined EU support for the High Peace Council in engaging Afghan civil society, in particular women, to take forward reconciliation.
In response, Mr. Rabbani said it was important that any peace process was inclusive and an advancement for women's rights and democracy in Afghanistan. He also emphasized the importance of High Peace Council engagement with the Provincial Peace Councils.
