The European Union's support to the Infrastructure sectors contributes to poverty reduction, economic growth and social development. Typically, investments in those sectors result in improved access to basic services, generate employment and enhance a country’s ability to trade and to integrate into the global economy. As such, they are key to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals. The European Union devotes a significant proportion of its development funding to that purpose and does so through both programmes addressed to individual beneficiary countries as well as its regional programmes aimed to support the economic integration of the five regional economic organizations of the wider Eastern, Southern Africa and Indian Ocean region (SADC, COMESA, EAC, IGAD, IOC).
