On the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance against Female Genital Mutilation (6 February 2013) the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice President of the Commission Catherine Ashton, Vice-President Viviane Reding, the EU's Justice Commissioner, Development Commissioner Andris Piebalgs, Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, responsible for International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response, Commissioner Cecilia Malmström, responsible for Home Affairs, and Commissioner Tonio Borg, responsible for Health Policy made the following statement.
The EU Delegation hosted a meeting between Dr Mark Dybul, the new Executive Director of the Gobal Fund to Fight Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the Heads of EU Member States Missions in Geneva.
25/02/13 - EU donates its first artwork to the UN
The Head of the EU Delegation, Mariangela Zappia, handed over the first artwork ever donated from the EU to the UN Office in Geneva, an artwork by Italian artist Clara Garesio entiteld "In Women's Hands".
26/03/13 - The Power of Empowered Women
'The Power of Empowered Women' was organized on 26 February during the High Level Segment of the 22nd Human Rights Council by a core group of women Ambassadors from the Permanent Missions of Brazil, Canada, Egypt, Qatar, Romania, the European Union, United Kingdom and United States. Dedicated to advancing the cause of gender equality and women’s empowerment, the event aimed at highlighting the transformative impact of women in societies around the world.
28/03/13 - Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention - Side event launching the EU Council decision in support of the Cartagena Action Plan
At the occasion of the anniversary of the entry into force of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, the EU together with the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention Implementation Support Unit organised a side-event at the UN in Geneva promoting further action and awareness.
06/03/13 - Freedom of Religion or Belief for All?
The EU Delegation invited on 6 March 2013 to a side event in the margins of the current session of the Human Rights Council to discuss the question "Freedom of Religion or Belief for All?". Speakers of the event included the Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Heiner Bielefeldt, the Human Rights Council President Remigiusz Henczel, as well as the two NGO Representative Diane Alai of Baha'I International and the Executive Director of Minority Rights Group, Mark Lattimer. The Independent Expert on Minority Issues, Rita Izsák, delivered a video message.
07/03/13 - Discussion on rights of the child
The EU together with the Group of Latin American and Caribbean Countries (GRULAC) organized the annual full-day meeting on the rights of the child on Thursday 7 March 2013, with a particular focus on the right of the child to the highest attainable standard of health. The full-day meeting provided a significant opportunity to discuss the challenges in achieving the full realization of the universal right to health, as recognized by the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
08/03/13 - Commemorating International Women's Day
On International Women's Day 2013, the Head of the EU Delegation to the UN in Geneva, Mariangela Zappia, spoke on behalf of the women Ambassadors in Geneva at the Human Rights Council.
The Preparatory Committee (PrepCom) for the 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) will hold its second session from 22 April to 3 May 2013 at the United Nations Office in Geneva. This meeting is the second of three sessions that will be held prior to the 2015 Review Conference.
EU will hold a side-event on EURATOM safeguards system as a model of regional safeguards mechanism (1st May)
