The African Forum for Agricultural Advisory Services (AFAAS) (11/09/2014)

The AFAAS is a continental body that brings National Agricultural Extension and Advisory Services under one umbrella and currently has 36 countries participating in its activities. In October 2013, AFAAS second Multi Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) was established under the World Bank (WB) with funding from the European Union (EU) and covers the period 2014 to 2018. The AFAAS MDTF's higher level objectives are rooted in the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) framework.

Oversight for the project is the AFAAS Board which is accountable to the General Assembly. The AFAAS Secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day management of the project. It is supported by FARA to link with general CAADP processes, and by thematic working Groups to identify issues that need to be addressed through special projects. In pursuit of the principle of subsidiarity, the primary implementing arms of the activities are the Country Fora (CF) which bring together a diverse range of AAS actors at national level.

The overall objective of the EU support is to enhance utilisation of improved knowledge and technologies by agricultural value chain actors for improving productivity oriented towards sustainable and equitable food security and economic growth.

The specific objective of the support is to ensure that producers and value chain actors within agricultural innovation systems have enhanced knowledge and capabilities to support and increase agricultural productivity in an environmentally sustainable and socially responsible way.

The results that the project shall target are:

Result 1: CAADP Pillar IV sufficiently involves advisory services providers in its strategy, workplan and implementation, contributing to making these services more effective and relevant.
