Welcome Message Ambassador Richard Jones

Dear visitor,

I feel honoured and privileged to have been appointed EU Ambassador to Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.  Switzerland and Liechtenstein have enjoyed a close relationship with the EU since the start of the process of European integration.  Situated at the heart of Europe, both countries have extremely close ties with the EU - politically, economically and culturally.  We share the same values of openness and freedom, of democracy and profound respect for human rights.

We can see evidence of these strong links between both Switzerland and Liechtenstein and the EU every day - through the free movement of persons enabling a large number of citizens to live and work on the other side of the borders, or through the high level of financial and economic exchange.  Liechtenstein, through its membership of the EEA, and Switzerland, through its various sectoral agreements with the EU, benefit enormously from direct access to the European Single Market.  One of the principal objectives of my assignment, however, is seeking ways to strengthen and streamline the institutional relationship between the EU and Switzerland, so that our immensely important economic partnership can develop as efficiently as possible in the future.  I look forward very much to cooperating closely with our Swiss partners in this common endeavour.

So, I am delighted to start my assignment in Berne, to represent the interests of the EU in Switzerland and Liechtenstein and to find new opportunities for cooperation between the three parties.  Since its establishment in 2007, the EU Delegation in Berne has contributed actively and energetically to the strengthening of these relations.  I hope in the coming years to build on the excellent work which has already been done, using my role to strengthen the bonds of friendship between the EU on the one side, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein on the other.

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website.
