Information Society and Media

The European Commission and the Government of Singapore signed in March 2009 a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation in the field of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). To implement this enhanced cooperation, the Directorate General for Information Society and Media of the European Commission (DG INFSO) has appointed a regional Counsellor for telecom and media policies, based in the Delegation of the European Union in Singapore.

Developed economies such as the EU and Singapore can learn from their respective regulatory approaches on issues such as broadband, mobile communications, media and internet content, eGovernment, innovative management of radio-spectrum and many more issues. The EU aims to step ups its regulatory dialogue with Singapore in the near future. This is in line with the ongoing negotiation of the Free Trade Agreement between the EU and Singapore. For a detailed overview of DG INFSO activities, see here.

R&D in the ICT sector is also a promising area of cooperation, with Singapore being a partner in the SEALING project. A R&D cooperation event on "ICT and future cities" took place in Singapore in April 2010. See here.

Also, the Delegation works to improve cooperation on film distribution and promotion between the two countries. For this the EU is launching the MEDIA Mundus programme on international cooperation between film industries.
