 The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is the first UN agencies created in 1945, at the end of the Second World War, to raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of the world economy.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. FAO helps developing countries and countries in transition to modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fishery practices and ensure good nutrition for all.

Since 1991, date in which the EU became the 161st member (as Member Organisation) of the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the EU-FAO partnership has continued to grow.

For the European Union, FAO is a centre of excellence with regards to normative work and policy advice in the main areas within its mandate. The EU considers very useful the Organisation's efforts to promote a North/South dialogue at expert level, thus developing interesting work in a wide variety of areas including with regard to world food security, the participation of rural populations in development, food safety issues, fisheries, forestry and sustainable development.
