Carlos Nuno Castel-Branco and Fernando Mbanze acquitted
Today's verdict underlines the importance of freedom of expression and the constitutional right of any Mozambican citizen to exercise it freely. The EU Delegation believes that this trial is an important milestone for the future interpretation and implementation of the right to freedom of expression in Mozambique.
The EU Delegation, together with several EU Member States embassies, has been closely following the cases against Carlos Nuno Castel-Branco and Fernando Mbanze and was also present at
the trial that took place on 31 August 2015. Trial monitoring is a standard practice for the European Union as we follow the functioning of the judiciary and the way human rights are protected throughout the world.
