Local statement following the assassination of Professor Gilles Cistac in Maputo on 3 March 2015 (03/03/2015)
The European Union Delegation issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Mozambique and Norway.
The European Union Heads of Mission are deeply shocked by the brutal assassination of the French-Mozambican citizen Gilles Cistac on March 3 in Maputo. We extend our most sincere condolences to his family.
Professor Gilles Cistac was a respected lawyer and academic who contributed to important legal debates over the past two decades in Mozambique.
This assassination is an attack against freedom of expression. The European Union calls on the authorities and all citizens to use dialogue and peaceful means in the political discourse. Only a democratic society where a plurality of opinions is not only respected but also encouraged and where all citizens can express themselves freely and without fear of political violence can bring peace and prosperity to the Mozambican people.
The EU supports President Nyusi's call for an immediate and full investigation, so that the perpetrators of this horrible act be brought to justice as there can be no space for impunity in a system of rule of law.
