Civil Environmental Council – towards a responsible future (21/06/2010)

On 22 of June the round table meeting “Creation of the Civil Environmental Council as a model of interaction between the executive authorities, businesses and society” will be held in Aktobe. The purpose of the round table will be development of the joint recommendations, which will regulate the work of the Council in the future.

According to various representatives of state structures and public organizations in the Aktobe region it is essential to involve civil society in formulating and implementing of environmental policies. To effectively address the issues of environmental safety, ecology and use of nature, as well as for the formation of ecological culture of the population, the civil structure, which has the status of consultative and deliberative body, is needed.

There are examples of public environmental councils, which contribute to improving the dialogue between the public and state environmental agencies and nature users in Kazakhstan. Similar councils are successfully operating in the Russian Federation. It is important for our region and the city to bring the environmental issues up to the public discussion for the coordination of nature protection actions.

The creation of the new council should help to solve in a more effective way the numerous social problems identified in the village, while drawing the attention of local and international partners and sponsors.

This round table is organized in the framework of the project IBPP TACIS «Transparency and public participation in environmental programs in Kazakhstan». The project is financially supported by the European Union in the amount of 158 444 Euro and implemented by OF EcoIDEA (Agency for development of environmental initiatives) together with Milieukontakt International (the Netherlands).

Media representatives are invited to cover the round table that will take place on 22 of June 2010 at 15:00 in the tea room of “Rakhat” restaurant, at the address: 54, av. Abylkhair khan.
