EU must be a space power, says High Representative Mogherini
EU News 11/2017
The European Union must be a space power, for political, economic and security reasons, High Representative Federica Mogherini said today.
“Europe can be and should be a space power,” Mogherini told the 9th Annual Conference on European Space Policy, in Brussels. “But we can only do so if we act together, as a true Union. We face a world of continent-sized space powers, with continent-sized budgets and we come out of a long economic crisis. So the only way to go is doing it together. We together can develop a world-class industrial and technological base. Only together can we promote a rules-based global order that reaches out to space. This is the aim of our 'Space Strategy for Europe'.”
Space infrastructure can serve many different purposes that are all key to the EU’s security – from maritime security, to monitoring climate change, to better planning development policies. There is also a clear link with security and defence and the economic potential of the space industry, the High Representative said. But for this to be achieved, there is a need for global governance of space activities.
