EU focuses on the economic empowerment of women at high-level Tokyo conference

European Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality Věra Jourová will open the European Union's High-Level Conference on the Economic Empowerment of Women on 12 December, 2016 in Tokyo. Mr Katsunobu Kato, Japan's Minister in charge of Women's Empowerment and Minister of State for Gender Equality, will deliver a keynote speech.

The Conference will gather around 300 participants including members of parliaments, governmental representatives, as well as the diplomatic community, private sector, academia and civil society.

This Conference is the first high-level event organised by the EU in Japan on gender equality issues, and opens a new area of dialogue in bilateral relations. The objective of this conference is to provide a platform for exchanging experiences in working towards achieving greater gender equality and reducing the economic gender gap in Europe and Japan, as well as to foster exchanges on successful policies and business practices.

Speakers and panellists from both Europe and Japan will share their experiences and expertise on a range of topics including female participation in the labour market, pay and pensions, equality in leadership positions and women entrepreneurship.
