Political & economic relation

Iraq has got a significant geopolitical position in the region. This, together with its proximity to the EU makes it an important partner for the EU.

Recognition of these factors but also its need for assistance in recent years has guided EU/EC efforts since the fall of Saddam Hussein. Key areas of assistance have been: political and electoral process, rule of law, human rights, support to refugees and IDPs, basic services, human development, and capacity building of Iraqi institutions.

Moreover, two important agreements have been negotiated which further strengthen these ties. The Memorandum of Understanding on Energy Cooperation was signed in January 2010 and the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (PCA) signed in 2012. For more details, please see the below links.
