The EU has some of the highest environmental standards in the world to address a wide range of issues. Today the main priorities are reducing health problems from pollution, combating climate change, preserving biodiversity and using natural resources more responsibly. While aimed at protecting the environment, these goals can contribute to economic growth by fostering innovation and enterprise.

 

Rising demand around the globe is increasing pressure on the environment, and creating greater competition for resources. The importance of managing natural resources more efficiently is therefore high. Pressures on biodiversity, soil and climate are constantly increasing, and a failure to address these environmental challenges could have dramatically negative consequences in the longer term. This is why the EU is going for a ‘Green growth’.
