Towards More Union in European Defence

Open seminar hosted by the Institute of International Affairs at the University of Iceland in collaboration with the EU Info Centre Thursday 21 May 2015 from 12:00 to 13:00 in Oddi 101

In recent years the European neighborhood has become increasingly unstable. Russia´s annexation of Crimea and the de-stabilization of Eastern Ukraine have delivered a blow to the Post-Cold War security order. In addition, the Syrian conflict and the increasing violence in Libya, as well as the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean, have caused EU member states to rethink their security awareness. At the same time, dramatic uncoordinated cuts in defence spending have eroded the European Union’s role as a security actor.

In this open seminar Steven Blockmans will present a report prepared by a CEPS Task Force chaired by Javier Solana. The report suggests policy actions to further the EU’s strategic, institutional, capabilities, and resources cooperation in the field of defence. Ultimately, in the view of the Task Force, further integration should amount to a ‘European Defence Union’ (EDU).

Steven Blockmans is the Head of the EU Foreign Policy Unit of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) and co-rapporteur of the CEPS Task Force on European Security and Defence.

Moderator: Eiríkur Bergmann, Professor of Political Science, Bifrost University.

The seminar will take place in English and is open to all.
