The European Day of Languages is today!

The European Day of Languages is celebrated around Europe today. The aim of the European Day of Languages, which is organised by the Council of Europe (CoE) and the European Union, is to raise awareness of the languages used in Europe, promote cultural and linguistic diversity and encourage life-long language learning.


The European Day of Languages was first organised by the Council of Europe in 2001 as part of the European Year of Languages and has since been celebrated on 26 September every year.

The Vigdís Finnbogadóttir Institute of Foreign Languages organises a seminar in celebration of the European Day of Languages, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Sicence and Culture and STÍL, The Association of Foreign Language Teachers in Iceland. The focus will be on the value of ancient languages and general language skills in the broadest context. Further information can be found here (in Icelandic).
