EU Ambassador stresses the importance of privacy rights and data protection (17/03/2016)

On 16 March Ambassador of the European Union, Janos Herman, paid a visit to the Office of the Personal Data Protection Inspector.  In his discussion with the Personal Data Protection Inspector, Ms Tamar Kaldani, both sides stressed the importance of privacy rights and their protection. This is a priority area in the EU-Georgia Association Agreement and the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan.

The two sides agreed that illegal surveillance is a grave violation of human rights and manipulating people's private lives is unacceptable under any circumstances.  Through various instruments, the European Union has been and will be supporting the strengthening of data protection in Georgia, including the Office of the Personal Data Protection Inspector in order to fully meet all the requirements and respond even better to the expectations of the Georgia society. The European Union's contribution in this area is consistent with the highest international standards and focuses on two important priorities: to protect individuals from harm and to bring perpetrators to justice.
