Local EU Statement on the re-election of President Tong of Kiribati (23/01/2012)

The European Union Delegation issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission accredited to the Republic of Kiribati.

The EU Delegation to the Republic of Kiribati would like to congratulate Honourable Anote Tong for his re-election as President of the Republic of Kiribati. We wish him every success in fulfilling his democratic mandate.

The European Union is looking forward to continuing and reinforcing its good relations with the Republic of Kiribati, pursuing common interests through political dialogue and carrying on successful development cooperation, especially on climate change. The EU praises President Tong's commitment as vocal advocate for an international approach to climate change catering for the concerns of all the Small Island Developing States.

The EU appreciates that the Republic of Kiribati, as a member of the Association of Small Island States (AOSIS), supports the EU position on the future of Kyoto Protocol, particularly in the need for greater ambition in cutting CO2 emissions and a firm 2015 deadline for a global climate pact. The EU is ready and willing to continue engaging in a partnership with the Republic of Kiribati, since, as a Small Island Developing State, it will be amongst those hit earliest and hardest by adverse climate change. In this context, the Joint Pacific – EU Initiative has strengthened our cooperation and we look forward to continuing to work together.

The EU also encourages the Republic of Kiribati to continue its commitment to achieving progress in the Kiribati Development Plan. Within the framework of the revised Cotonou Partnership Agreement, the EU will continue to assist the Republic of Kiribati in progressing towards the UN Millennium Development goals.
