EU Studies in Canada

European Union Centres of Excellence in Canada (EUCEs)

Following a call for proposals in 2012, the European Commission has signed grant agreements with three Canadian universities as designated European Union Centres of Excellence (EUCEs). They are: Carleton University (Ottawa, Ontario), Dalhousie University (Halifax, Nova Scotia) and University of Alberta (Edmonton, Alberta).

The EUCE at Carleton University in Ottawa serves as the Network and Outreach Coordinator, with the goal of promoting cooperation and sharing best practices within the network of EUCEs in Canada.
The EUCEs serve as focal points for the study of the European Union and the numerous developments which are currently unfolding across Europe. Grants totalling €960,000 fund activities for a three-year period. Each of the EUCE promotes the study of the EU, its institutions and policies as well as EU-Canada relations through teaching programs and scholarly research. Interdisciplinary by design, they attract students, researchers and other academics with a variety of interests and approaches.

The EUCEs are part of a wider effort aimed at fostering people-to-people ties across different disciplines and across the Atlantic, in hopes of helping to cement and expand the already broad-ranging partnership between the European Union and Canada. In addition, the EU Centres act as bases for outreach programs on EU issues.
